چکیده

At the Conference held at Birnagar in February 1929 to discuss the problem of malaria in that town, I submitted a proposal for concentrating attack upon Anopheles philippinensis which was found to carry malarial parasites in Nature in the Nadia District. In preference to a general campaign against anophelines, Sir Malcolm Watson, who presided at the meeting, accepted the view that the breeding grounds of A. philippinensis should be located in co-operation with the Public Health Department, Bengal, and dealt with by larvicides, but suggested at the same time that the campaign against other anopheline species breeding in numerous other tanks and pools at Birnagar should be continued. It must be admitted that our knowledge of the carrier species at Birnagar was inadequate at that time and he was fully justified in supporting the continuance of a general campaign of oiling which had been our aim at the beginning. I have explained in my previous reports that this " general campaign" was, in practice, of a restricted nature owing partly to the public opposition and partly to the in-

Chitosan nanocapsules of tarragon essential oil with low cytotoxicity and long-lasting activity as a green nano-larvicide

Frequent use of synthetic larvicides has led to the development of resistance in many species of mosquitoes as well as risk of environmental pollution. Recently, encapsulating essential oils (EOs) in surfactants or polymers is being employed as an approach to control the volatility of EOs as green larvicides. In this research, components of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) essential oil were id...

Small-Scale Trials Suggest Increasing Applications of Natular™ XRT and Natular™ T30 Larvicide Tablets May Not Improve Mosquito Reduction in Some Catch Basins

Stormwater catch basins are commonly treated with larvicides by mosquito control agencies to reduce local populations of mosquito species capable of transmitting West Nile virus. Recent evidence suggests that extended-release larvicides formulated to last up to 180 days in catch basins may not be effective in some basins due to chronic flushing, rapid dissolution, or burying of treatment in sum...

Assessment of Reactive Catch Basin Larvicide Treatments Toward Improved Water Quality Using FourStar(®) Briquets and CocoBear™ Larvicide Oil.

Because it is often logistically impossible to monitor all catch basins within an operational area, local mosquito control programs will preemptively treat catch basins with larvicides each season. However, these larvicides can, ostensibly, be considered water quality pollutants. To experimentally reduce the use of larvicides toward improving water quality, 30 basins within a small 0.7-km(2) re...

Integrated malaria vector control with microbial larvicides and insecticide-treated nets in western Kenya: a controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE To assess the contributions of both microbial larvicides and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in terms of reducing malaria incidence in an integrated vector management programme in an area moderately endemic for malaria in the western Kenyan highlands. METHODS A pre-post, control group design was used. Larval and adult vector populations were surveyed weekly in six separate valley co...

1Tropical Health Department, High Institute of Public Health, University of Alexandria, Alexandria, Egypt. ABSTRACT We conducted a study to determine the laboratory and field efficacy of neem oil towards anopheline larvae. No difference in LC50 was observed between laboratory and field strains for temephos, chlorpyriphos-methyl/fenitrothion and neem oil. No difference in susceptibility was foun...

Combining Attractants and Larvicides in Biodegradable Matrices for Sustainable Mosquito Vector Control

BACKGROUND There is a global need for cost-effective and environmentally friendly tools for control of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases. One potential way to achieve this is to combine already available tools to gain synergistic effects to reduce vector mosquito populations. Another possible way to improve mosquito control is to extend the active period of a given control agent, enabling ...
